In person, not just online.
A wellknown.id isn’t only for websites. The same wallet could carry a shop’s loyalty card and its receipts, with no email address to give, and show a door or a till only what it needs, such as that you’re over 18. This is a plan, not something that works yet.
How it would work
The till asks, and you choose what it gets.
- A loyalty card the shop signs. The shop signs a card to a key of yours made for that shop, the way memberships would work. It holds your stamps or points, with no account, email address or phone number behind it.
- Receipts to your wallet. The till sends a signed receipt to your wallet instead of to an email address. You keep it, for a return or your own records, and the shop needn’t know who you are to send it.
- You choose what to show. At the till or the door, the reader asks for what it needs: your loyalty card, a receipt, that you’re over 18. kivi shows the request and sends only what you approve, as it does for websites.
- A different key for every shop, as online, so two shops can’t compare notes and find they know the same person.
Proving your age
Over 18 at the door, and nothing else.
kivi already reads and checks the chip in your passport or ID card, and answers websites that ask whether you’re over 18: see Prove you’re 18+. Showing the same answer in person, phone to reader at a door or a till, is still to come. The reader would learn that you’re over 18, and not your name, your birthday or your photo.
The likely route is ISO/IEC 18013-5, the standard behind mobile driving licences, which shows claims to a reader nearby over NFC or Bluetooth, so that readers built for it could ask kivi too.
What to know
Where it stands.
- Built: kivi reads and checks UK passports and Estonian ID cards, and answers websites that ask whether you’re over 18, on Android.
- Not built: loyalty cards, receipts, and showing anything in person, at a door or a till.
- What it won’t do: tell wellknown.id what you buy, or where. Cards and receipts would go between the shop and your wallet, not through wellknown.id.
wellknown.id is in development. This page describes a plan, and says what works now.
