Memberships, shown where you choose.

A club, union or employer can vouch for your membership by signing a claim about your key, and you decide where to show it. This is a plan, not something that works yet.

How it would work

Vouched for once, shown by you.

  • The club signs a claim about your key: “the holder of this did:key is a member”. It doesn’t need your name for that.
  • kivi keeps the claim, on your own device.
  • You choose where to show it. A rowing club’s booking page could let members in without keeping a list of passwords, and you could show your membership somewhere else without the club knowing where.
  • Each site decides whose word it takes, in its own rules, so no one organisation is the gatekeeper.

Who vouches

Any organisation can, and each site chooses.

This is the same idea as witnesses for documents: a claim is worth what whoever vouched for it checked. Organisations would publish who they are and what they vouch for in their own wellknown.id config, with no registry, as wellknown.id’s own witness already does (in preview). The signatures are designed not to become a tracker that follows you from site to site.

What to know

Where it stands.

  • Built: kivi on Android holds claims from the documents you read, and answers sites with only what’s asked.
  • Not built: claims signed by clubs and organisations, and sites that accept them.
